02.15.06 Game Report vs 2 Left Feet

They call games like these "learning games": the games a team grows from, and pinpoints certain weaknesses. We can blame hard luck or different (white) jerseys and mismatched numbers, or maybe even the cookies, but whatever the cause of last night's loss to 2 Left Feet: none of the Gators ever want it to happen again. The game last night began at a fast-pace. With barely two lines to play, the Gators took on 2 Left Feet, a team that brought sixteen players to the game, and kept both sides hustling to keep up. Both teams kept shots out, until 2 Left Feet scored in the second half of the first period. A little shocked, after coming from a shutout victory game last week, the Gators skated hard, but remained down going into the second period. Finally, with a wild shot at the net, and with less than six minutes left in the second, Brian Drake scored on Dave Salafia's assist, helping the team come back a little from 2 Left Feet's two more goals. Chris Ryan, with a great hustle on defense the whole night, almost scored a second goal soon after, but the whistle had been blown and play stopped, so it didn't quite make it. Defense kept up, and offense played hard, but already playing as if beaten, the team just didn't come together as they had in previous games. The final goal was scored by 2 Left Feet in the third period, ending the game 4-1. The Gators' 37 shots on goal were just barely outdone by 2 Left Feet's 43 shots on goalie Jerry Suplicki, and the Gators were met with their first loss of the season.

Keeping the game a little more interesting: Greg Williams made it into the penalty box along with an opposing player, and Jim Suplicki managed to just stand firm on the ice as he was rushed by a 2 Left Footer, knocking the opponent down and sending the thug into the box John Scully showed up, played, and patented a new technique: playing the puck with the butt-end of his stick while on his knees. Nice effort, Scully! Seen all over the ice last night... because he kept falling, was Drake, stealing the post-game boyish teasing from Williams for once. While 2 Left Feet began to get a little rough and mouthy, the Gators took it all in stride, and pushed back just hard enough. Don't be fooled: the night wasn't a total downer: one adorable fan made post-Valentine's Day comfort-food cookies to enjoy in the bar afterwards, and sat as the team's personal eye-candy to ease the pain of their loss.
