03.01.06 Game Report vs The Cuzzies (by Christine Andrzejewicz)

The Gators' second game against the Cuzzies this past Wednesday showed exactly what it takes to unify as a team, even the in absence of players. Missing their leader in goals, Dave Salafia (15) this week, the Gators played the Cuzzies (who manned the ice with fifteen players), with less than two full lines, and still won. While this game didn't exactly mirror the first meeting between the two teams (a Gators' win of 10-0), it certainly put a spotlight on players who were willing to step-it-up in order to compensate for the lack of men on the ice that night. The first period began with Brian Drake zipping back and forth on the ice, and scoring the first goal less than one full minute into the period (helped by Brian Pasono (17) and Brian Curtis (21)). Pasono won the puck at the following face-off, scoring the next goal. The entire first period saw Pasono and Drake passing and shooting, with great accuracy. By the end of the first period, Drake had scoring four goals, Pasono two, and the Cuzzies still simply looked on, as they didn't score at all until the second period. The Cuzzies scored three of their five points in the second, while the Gators slowed down a bit and stayed at six goals. In the third, Drake scored the final goal for the Gators, seemingly wrapping the game up at 6-3, until one last Cuzzie shot went through with a little over eight minutes left in the game. Overall, the night belonged to the Gators yet again.
Throughout the game, assists were given by teammates : Scott Magin (3) with 2 assists, Seth Sealfon (4) one assist, Frank Warner (5) two assists, Jim Suplicki (19) three assists and some tough defense, Curtis with a total of three assists, and both goalie Jerry Suplicki (35) and John Davie (76) with one assist each. Davie ran into some trouble in the third period, but stayed out of the penalty box, while a returning face showed up in the box again this week: Chris Ryan (27); due to a little rough play on the ice with a Cuzzie who posed a problem last game as well. The defense seemed a little short handed without Greg Williams (6), out on injury, but Warner and Ryan kept the puck out as much as possible. The Cuzzies tried without success to break the Gators' defense that night with their 40+ shots on goalie Suplicki, but Gator offence proved just a bit stronger. With only 26 shots on the Cuzzies' goalie, accuracy and smart plays won the game for the Gators in the end.

Final score: 7-5, Gators.
