03.29.06 Game Report vs The Avalanche
In an 8-3 win over The Avalanche, The Gators exhibited their talent all night: from the very minute they were on the ice, down to 45 seconds left in the game when they scored their last goal of the night. The game began with Brian Drake (18) scoring on assists from John Davie (76) to John Scully (32), and led the team in the right direction for the rest of the night. The rest of the first period was stable: no shots were let in on Jerry Suplicki (35), and the only other goal scored by the Gators was Rob Strelick's (#9-for this game) second attempt at a goal [the first was denied by the referees], and was scored right off the face-off with 1:40 left before the second period. Staying alive in the game- the Avalanche scored their first goal at 13:15 in the second period, but were met with the Gators' third goal immediately after at 12:52 with Strelick's assist to Drake's goal. Less than two minutes later, John Scully (32) scored a slippery shot assisted by Strelick and Drake, bringing the score to 4-1, Gators. Chris Ryan (27) then headed out to the ice and passed to Drake, who saw newcomer Bryan Hapeman (#3...for now) open for the shot. Hapeman scored at 8:54, and proved to be a helpful addition to the team. The sixth goal was made by Dave Salafia (15), assisted by Jim Suplicki (19), and ended up being the last goal of an amazing second period. The third period opened up with the Avalanche taking a cheap shot [up and over Suplicki's head while he was crowded into his net (35)] at 10:37, scoring their second goal. The Gators came right back, at 10:02, with a pass from Davie to Strelick, then to Drake, for lucky goal number seven. Seemingly the end of the game, the Gators' defense took over and made sure to keep shots down to a minimum, while opening up opportunities for offense to take another few shots on the Avalanche. The Avalanche, however, somehow burst through the Gators' defense with one last shot on goal, and scored their third and final goal at 58 seconds left in the game. Never beaten, the Gators' Frank Warner (5) got the puck after the face-off, passed to Strelick, and the last goal of the game was finally scored, with 45 seconds left on the clock. There were some close calls in-between, but defensive players Warner, Suplicki (19), and Ryan kept the Avalanche players out. Warner stopped a shot directly in the path of Suplicki's (35) net, just inches away from going in, halting what would have been the second goal for the opposition. Suplicki (19) did the same in the third period, stepping in front of his brother Jerry to help out. The Gators out-shot their opponents, with 39 hits on net compared to the Avalanche's 28 (which was originally believed to be 16 or 18, until a certain player in the bar afterwards [name rhymes with Lyin' Snake... :)] corrected me. There were no penalties called on the Gators this game (not even on Ryan!), but plenty of falling... We won't name names, but, I have the jersey numbers written down with a tally next to each one if anyone's interested. Great win, boys!! 8-3 win.
