Week 1 -
09.12.07 Gators vs Antiques
The Gators faced a tough team last Wednesday; The Antiques
once again. Team Green have lost six straight games to The
Antiques which spanned 3 seasons. Strong out of the gates,
The Gators won the game 4-1.
Game 1 (9/12/07) vs. Noonan's Antiques
Hopefully setting the pace for the rest of this season,
The Gators took on The Antiques and won for the first time
in the teams' past six encounters. The result of a last-minute
scheduling change, the opposing teams both came out strong
to start the game off. With help from Brian Pasono (17)
and Jack Hibit (9), Steve Randall (10) started the scoring
off just two minutes into the first period. Quickly coming
back, The Antiques managed to get their one and only goal
past keeper Jerry Suplicki (35) at 9:08, but the score did
not remain tied for long. Two minutes later, Dave Varecka
(18) made his shot, assisted by Mark Schirmer (11), giving
The Gators a 2-1 lead going into the second period.
The second period gave Suplicki (35) a workout, with The
Antiques non-stop shooting from every angle. Luckily, Gator
offense wrestled the puck back, and Pasono scored at 7:57
off an assist from Varecka and John Scully (32). Barely
one minute later, Suplicki (35) moved the puck along to
Dave Salafia (15) to score the final goal of the evening.
The Antiques nearly scored once more in the third period,
but The Gator goalie proved his skill, making a blind save,
and keeping the score 4-1 for the remainder of the game.
Although out-shot by The Antiques, The Gators team came
together seamlessly Wednesday night, with nearly all their
returning players and one of the two additions to this season's
team: defenseman Alé Mendoza (4). The slight changes
in lines and positions worked well for the men; and having
an extra week to recuperate and practice before Game 2,
the guys are sure to deliver a repeat performance when they
return to the ice September 26th. Bing bong!
